The English Spy Review

Masterly international espionage thriller
Once again Daniel Silva has shown us that he is a master of espionage thrillers. This is #15 in the Gabriel Allon series and I am always fascinated how top writers are able to maintain the quality and momentum of a series. Silva has done this in a masterly way by bringing together a collection of characters and events from some of his previous books and built them into a riveting thriller.
Israeli spymaster Gabriel Allon is facing two major hurdles in his life, one he is looking forward to and one he isn't. Soon he will become a father again - his wife Chiara is carrying twins. Then he will be forced to become head of "The Office" and no longer be called to work in the field. He reflects that "the life of a professional spy is one of constant travel, mind-numbing boredom broken by interludes of sheer terror".

"There's only one person I would trust with a job like this."
Those who have followed Gabriel Allon's career since he first appeared in "The Kill Artist" know what to expect from a Daniel Silva novel: 1. It will be long, probably exceeding five hundred pages. 2. Although Gabriel is weary of bloodshed, he will be dragged back into the fray to carry out perilous operations against his enemies. 3. The author will explore themes about the politics of the Middle East and Russia. 4. Allon's associates from the Office (Israeli intelligence) will appear in supporting roles. 5. There will be allusions to key events that occurred earlier in order to keep new readers in the loop. 6. Most of the action will take place in such European countries as Italy, England, Germany, and France.

Nobody Does It Better
The English Spy is another multi-layered utterly riveting book from Daniel Silva, who is as knowledgable about his subject matter as he is deft in telling us the story. The English Spy, the fifteenth book in the Gabriel Allon series is set in a potpourri of cities - virtually all the sites of previous adventures - only a few months after the end of "The Heist." the previous Allon adventure. By doing this, the clever and witty Mr. Silva is buying both us and his main character, Gabriel Allon time before he must leave the field and take over The Office. As a result, we see relatively little of the lovely and intriguing Mrs. Allon, Chiara, who is heavily pregnant with twins conceived two books back, but to make up for her absence, we are reunited with an array of characters good and bad from previous stories.

About the Author

He has been called his generation's finest writer of international intrigue and one of the greatest American spy novelists ever. Compelling, passionate, haunting, brilliant: these are the words that have been used to describe the work of #1 New York Times-bestselling author Daniel Silva.

When the Great Depression hits, Mazie's life is on the brink of transformation. Addicts and bums roam the Bowery; homelessness is rampant. If Mazie won't help them, then who? When she opens the doors of The Venice to those in need, this ticket taking, fun-time girl becomes the beating heart of the Lower East Side, and in defining one neighborhood helps define the city.

Jami Attenberg’s Saint Mazie couldn’t be more different from her popular The Middlesteins, in that it is a) historical not contemporary, b) loosely based on a real woman who lived in early 20th century New York City instead of on an all-too-real fictional character in suburban Chicago andc) told as an oral history instead of as a traditional narrative. Still, this novel exhibits the same kind of wit and depth and heart of the earlier one.

Saint Mazie: A Novel Review

I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. The real Mazie must have been an incredible person. This fictionalized account is part hit and part miss. It tells Mazie’s story through numerous sources – in fact, a few too numerous for my taste. Most of this story is told in the form of entries in Mazie’s diary, started when she was a child, with excerpts from Mazie’s unpublished autobiography and interviews with people who knew Mazie directly or indirectly.

This was a premise to which I couldn't say no. From the window of her train, troubled, alcoholic commuter Rachel Watson watches the world --including a couple who are frequently out on their terrace at the very point her train stops every day. She names them Jason and Jess and decides their lives are the perfect happy-ever-after that hers has never been. But then Jess, whose name is really Megan, goes missing; and Rachel's memory of the night Megan disappeared is a yawning black hole. Did she see something? Can she help these strangers who continually draw her into their lives? I expected a taut psychological exploration driven by the mystery, but Hitchcock this isn't. None of the characterizations ring true, and the plot is created by withholding information the characters would naturally be thinking about (other than Rachel, who can't think about the plot due to alcohol-induced blackouts).

Suddenly One Summer (Novel) Review

Suddenly One Summer...no suddenly about it. All of Julie Jame's books have been good from her first to this one!
I really enjoyed Suddenly One Summer by Julie James. It is a good story and the characters are likable. Ms. James writes in such a way that the words simply glide along. I definitely like her style. I liked the fun witty banter between her characters. Ms. James is becoming known for her great dialogue, feisty, confident heroines and charming, irresistible heroes. Since it was Ford Dixon's story, I loved it even more. We first meet Ford as a secondary "best-friend" character in Love Irresistibly. I'm glad he got a story of his own.

Flirty and fun
Isn't it great when the two leads don't exactly like each other in the beginning but eventually gets their HEA? My answer is yes!!! Julie James makes me laugh out loud with her quick, witty dialogue that infuses each story with laughter. Ford and Victoria are great sparring partners (and neighbors) from the beginning and it's great fun to see them not lose any of that throughout the story. Need an escape? Want to read a fun, sexy read...grab this book!!!

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life as she sees it is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved.

The Girl on The Train is a dark, haunting and depressing psychological thriller, but it's incredibly effective thanks to the writing skills of author Paula Hawkins. Rachel is a divorced woman who would do anything for a drink, and like a lot of folks consumed by a love affair with the bottle, one might call her a victim of circumstances. Her husband Tom had an affair that resulted in a pregnancy. He divorced Rachel, married the "other woman" and now all three (husband, wife and child) are happily ensconced in the house that was once Rachel's

The book is told in three voices: Rachel, Megan and Anna. The fact that Rachel has a history of drunken blackouts and has a hard time separating fact from fiction makes her overtly suspect, even to herself.

The Girl on the Train Review

Rachel is a woman who considers herself worthless. She feels that women are only valued for two things: their looks and their role as a mother. She is barren and rather plain looking. Unbeknownst to her landlady she has lost her job but continues to ride the commuter train twice a day. Unfortunately she must pass the home of her ex-husband Tom and his new wife Anna. They've recently had a child which is something Rachel was unable to produce when she was married to him. He's moved his new family into the home that he and Rachel once shared. Tom posted a picture of himself and his newborn on Facebook with the caption that he's never been happier.

Rachel, in her despondency, has taken to drinking to a point where she has blackouts and forgets that she drunk calls her husband many times a night, even shows up at his home. Because of a signal malfunction she often finds her rail car stopped on the tracks next to her former home. She starts to notice another couple who live a few doors down. She refers to them as the golden couple and manufactures a narrative about their lives as she observes them each day. They gradually become important to her.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge

All the Light We Cannot See Review

It has been a while since I have found a book that I wanted to read slowly so that I could soak in every detail in hopes that the last page seems to never come. When reading the synopsis of this novel, I never imagined that I would feel so connected to a book where one of the main characters is blind and the other a brilliant young German orphan who was chosen to attend a brutal military academy under Hitler's power using his innate engineering skills.

This novel was so much more than the above states. The idiosyncrasies of each individual character are so well defined and expressed in such ways that come across the page almost lyrically. I was invited into the pages and could not only imagine the atmosphere, but all of my senses were collectively enticed from the very first page until the last.

ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE is one of the best books you’ll read this year. On one hand, the title implies the lessons learned by a young German orphan boy about radio waves. On the other hand, as the author describes it, “It’s also a metaphorical suggestion that there are countless invisible stories still buried within World War II.” Add in a newly blinded French girl who is forced to leave her familiar surroundings, and you’ll soon find yourself in literary heaven.

The layered meanings run deep in this book. No wonder nearly every advanced review uses the word “intricate” to describe this masterpiece. The German boy and his sister discover an old radio, where they hear science lessons from afar. There are lessons about the brain, sitting inside the darkness of our skull, interpreting light; there are lessons about coal having been plants living millions of years ago, absorbing light, now buried in darkness; lessons about light waves that we cannot see—all applicable as the story unfolds.

About The Author

Anthony Doerr has won numerous prizes for his fiction. His most recent novel, All the Light We Cannot See, was named a best book of 2014 by a number of publications, and was a #1 New York Times Bestseller.

Christian Grey's candid narrative gives the familiar story a raw, passionate and much sexier context ... the Ana that Christian Grey sees: sexy, seductive, witty and in his own words "a siren". She displays a compelling blend of vulnerability and backbone and finally feels like a character women can get behind ... Best of all the book allows readers direct access to Christian Grey's deepest, darkest thoughts ... It is fascinating to read the story with fresh eyes too, having glimpsed Christian's traumatic childhood and gained an understanding of his motivations.

Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian Review

Let me start off first by saying I looked forward to this book once it was announced. I am giving it only 4.5 stars because I was disappointed that it didn't cover all the books. I have read some of the reviews posted and while I am not bashing anyone's opinion I would simply like to point out some facts.
1. This is a retelling of the original story but from Christians POV--therefore how can the author make it be different or original
2. Whereas I did find Christian to be immature and childish in his actions and thoughts those of us who read the original series new this already. His growth didn't come around until after the second book started. Even Dr. Flynn tells Ana that in a lot of ways emotionally Christian is still a child so this is not news.
3. I do believe this book helped to better understand Christian I am not altogether certain it was necessary as the series was already a huge success but just as I am sure with other readers the times I really wanted to know what he was thinking came in book two and three.
For instance when he and Ana marreid, what was on his mind as he and Ros made their way home after Charlie Tango crashed, and I really want into his head the night he confronted Elena at his mother's home.
4. As far as the movie I watched it and believed it to have been as true to the book as was possible for a decent rating. Although I honestly believe that there is NO ONE that could have been picked to play the part of Christian that would have been accepted by all the fans of this series. Each woman as we read FSOG had a mental picture of Christian and everyone's picture would have varied in some way
