The book is a ride through the most troubling period in SF history. It is fascinating, disturbing, and enlightining . The characters that shaped the city are heros and villans. The plots of the Dirty Harry/Streets of San Francisco movies from the 70's are very real to what was happening. The culture that started with mellow hippies created drug crazed demons. The chilling zebra killings (local blacks murdering whites for sport). The civil war that removed the "old in's and installed the "new out's" was a megolithic cultural change that altered the soul of the city forever (for better or worse). Unbelievable violence and pollitical corruption raged from the left (New World Liberation, SLA, Peoples Temple). Jonestown, Dan White's assasinations of Moscone and Milk within a week of eachother were almost to sureal for the citizens to believe. You will be holding your breath throughout most of the book, but will exhale when a divided city comes together for the first 49ner superbowl victory(amazing what sports can do). I was there for it all and can tell you the author got it right.

I just received advance copies of this book in the mail today, directly from the publisher, and only one word can be used to describe this portfolio: Stunning! This large coffee table book offers 285+ pages of photographs, comments from notable individuals connected to Marilyn, and quotes from the legend herself.

While the book is being touted as providing never-before-seen images of Marilyn, the die-hard Monroe aficionado will likely have seen most of the photographs of Marilyn contained in the book. However, even I came across several photos of Marilyn in Metamorphosis that I have never seen. About the Author

Australian-born David Wills is an author, independent curator, photographic preservationist, and editor who has accrued one of the world's largest independent archives of original photographs, negatives, and transparencies. He has contributed material to many publications and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Wills has produced a series of photography exhibitions based on images from his archive. I frequently watch Shane on Youtube (to be specific, everyday). And getting to see into his life, almost like it was "our little secret", was really fun but really sad at the same time. I don't mean I was sad that I spent the time reading it, I meant the story was sad. I knew from a lot of Shane's video's that he had a hard time when he was growing up, but I didn't know it was like that. Being a Christian, like Shane, it was good to see that he went to God for help when he needed it. I must say, it was great getting to have Shane for an hour and a half while reading rather then only 5 minutes a day.

Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs Review

A Life in the Arts
Sally Mann's "Hold Still" is a thoroughly remarkable achievement. Her stories -- lush, densely interwoven and filled with allegory -- unfold with an eloquence reminiscent of passages from "One Hundred Years of Solitude". And along the way, her backstage color commentary on the character (and the characters) of the South could give "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil" a good run for its money. (Picture a Netflix mini-series titled "The Family of Mann"...).

Emotions In Black & White
I got to know of sally's work through "What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann" documentary. Art and architecture can offer an emotional value only when one’s breath is taken away by such art, when one is checked out for a period of time and can hardly think of anything else other than what they are witnessing through the creation of that artist. I am in possession of few works by Ansel Adams and although I travel to those places that Ansel has photographed time after time, the fact that I am checked out year after year looking at Ansel's photos of the same places that I visit time after time, it still does not take away the emotions that Ansel offers me through his art time after time, as well as to others for centuries to come.

Exceptional
This is easily one of the most accomplished memoirs I have ever read--insightful, smart, funny, and exceptionally well-written. Before reading this book I knew Mann only from the controversies surrounding some of her photographs, but a few pages into this book and I was totally riveted by her storytelling skills and intellectual brilliance. Old family photos, letters, and Mann's own photographs lend texture to an exquisitely crafted memoir. An absolute must-read.

Challenging, mesmerising, poetic
Some of my favourite books have been memoirs of a challenging relationship with an animal - Jane Shilling's Fox in the Cupboard, Gavin Maxwell's otter oeuvre. H is for Hawk belongs alongside them.
If that description 'relationship with an animal' sounds fluffy or cosy to you, think again. These animals aren't pets. They are forces to be negotiated with, embodiments of the wild that pitch you into a different way of life and living. You don't invite an otter, a horse or a goshawk to be your friend. You go to their world. You tune into their mind, their instincts, their priorities, their joys, their fears - and in so doing, you find the places where you are wild yourself. And that wildness doesn't mean uncomplicated freedom. Its values have little in common with human concerns. It is a stripped-away state of being, a universe of survival and struggle, where trust might be life or death.

A remarkable experience for all nature-lovers
This promised to be my kind of book; grief and healing through immersion in the natural world, specifically through training a goshawk. Add to these ingredients a parallel rediscovery of T.H.White's own book on training a bird of prey, 'the Goshawk' (which I haven't read but as 'The Once and Future King was my favourite book throughout adolescence, I knew a little about the writer). I wasn't disappointed.
Beautifully written, this is a book to savour, to read and re-read, slowly. I lived through every moment of frustration and breakthrough in training Mabel. I loved the wealth of falconry detail and appreciated Helen Macdonald's sharp analysis of 'the baggage' in all the advice. Sexism, philosophy, animal rights and - above all - death: this passionate adventure in the company of a wild creature raises some big questions and offers only the experience itself in response.

Very Moving and beautifully descriptive book.
An exceptionally well written book, I looked after a Raptor with a damaged wing, I looked after him for nearly a year. When his wing had healed, we took him up into the mountains and released him, it was one of the most moving experiences of my life, I learnt how to look after him from T.H. White's book, The Goshawk. I wished "H is for Hawk" had been around at the time.
A Wonderful, Wonderful Book for me and my circumstances. We were in Africa at the time and weren't too sure as to what exactly species he was, but he was very, very big. so we called him, "Arry Awk" I beleived I was quite close to him over the period and H is for Hawk brought back so many happy memories.

Primates of Park Avenue: A Memoir Review

Lacking content and stories
I was disappointed by this book for the following reasons:
(1) All the hype in the press basically revealed most content before publication, so when reading the book I felt like I had already read the material.
(2) There are not really any well-developed characters. It basically lumps these moms all together. For sure, they have different an interesting stories. I understand her not wanting to betray the trust of friends by revealing their stories. I would not either, but the book suffers because of it.
(3) I read the book in about 4 hours and with Kindle it's hard to get a sense of how long a book really is, but I didn't feel it was worth the money spent on it. Related to this, if I understand correctly, she lived with these people for six years. It seems like this book would have taken about 1-2 years to put together at most.

Mean Girls...all grown up and humorless
Judging by the cover, the publishers are clearly aiming for the beach-reading-chick-lit audience, and I was happy to oblige, picking up the book for a fun summer read. Unfortunately, even for a breezy story I was disappointed by the laziness of this book. If you have ever seen the movie Mean Girls, you know the predictable storyline. Fish out of water 'normal girl' attempts to integrate herself into a strange subculture of wealthy, spoiled and entitled girls. Secretly, she reports on their strange behaviors to her 'normal friends' while comparing them to jungle animals, eventually turning into the very thing she was initially repelled by. I was into the concept, however without the addition of Tina Fey's wry humor, the story is just...boring. With broad strokes, the author paints herself as an 'anthropologist' and frequently structures the beginning of chapters like a tongue in cheek scientific paper. Quoting Jane Goodall over and over and over and over again, the author seems to think that we won't understand the title unless she brings up the mating rituals of primates every 20 pages.

A Great Read!
This is an absolutely wonderful book about a Soviet engineer that spied for the U. S. from 1979-1985.
The book is about Adolf Tolkachev and the outstanding efforts he performed for the U.S. and the various C.I.A operatives that helped secure the information, sometimes not well. There were times when the case officer assigned to the case seems to be a bit young for the job and many did not realize that Mr. Tolkachev was truly The Million Dollar Spy.

Yes Please Review

More Amy Poehler books? Yes Please!
I will first admit that I'm a sucker for these type of books. I've read Mindy Khaling's, Tina Fey's, Lena Dunham's and even Ellen Degeneres'. I'll also admit that I'm a 24 year old girl, and that my opinions are probably biased based on my age and the (lack of) life experiences I've had so far.
First of all, if you're considering picking up the book versus buying the Kindle version, I would strongly recommend the hard copy. The book is formatted with glossy pages full of colored pictures and chapter titles that I really love (attached some photos and a video). It makes the reading experience a whole lot more exciting. Every time I turned upon a new chapter, I would have to stop for a moment and smile to myself.

ENJOYABLE, FUN AND FASCINATING!
I don't know if one can label this book as a memoir. Yes Please by Amy Poehler (or can she be called the author as it has chapters written by others as well?) is a mishmash of advice, humor, essays, poems, and of course, memoir. Yes please, it is a delightful book to read, brutally honest, sincere, witty and at times harsh on herself. I never thought it would be such a pleasure to read as I have a low opinion of celebrities dishing out advice but Amy Poehler's Yes Please turns out to be quite perceptive and refreshingly different.

Wise But Not LOL
I really enjoy Amy Poehler and I was so excited to get this book-I'd read interviews with her about the book, like in Entertainment Weekly, and couldn't wait because it sounded funny and honest. Know how sometimes you can't wait to see a movie, then you see it and realize the best bits were everything you saw in the trailer? That's sort of how I feel about this book.
It's well written (and, if you get the paper version the publisher put a lot into the paper quality and photos etc.) and there are some fun lines, but it's more wise than LOL.
Also, I felt kind of old to be reading it-I'm roughly her age and it felt like she intended some of the wisdom for younger women in earlier stages of life, and that was really disappointing. The chapters on SNL and Parks and Rec were good but not really detailed for as long as she was on both shows-but there are constant references to the Upright Citizens Brigade. Lots of talk about motherhood and her sons and orphans in Haiti. Oh and a chapter on the pros and cons of drugs (which seems to offend some people who feel pros come out ahead). If you're looking for gossip, there's not much but she does name drop.
